“How do I know if I need a nanny vs. a sitter?”
Great Question! Let’s break down the terminology:
A nanny is a caregiver who provides consistently scheduled care that exceeds 3 months. There is also a financial component that differentiates a nanny and a sitter. If you have a caregiver in your employ and pay exceeds $2700 in a fiscal year, then you are employing a nanny because you have met the minimum obligated tax responsi. Legally speaking, nannies must be paid as W2 employees by families, as they are classified as domestic workers. It is illegal to pay them as 1099s.
A sitter is a caregiver who provides inconsistently scheduled, as-needed care; think date nights, single day bookings, temporary care, etc. The financial component of a nanny would ONLY come into effect if your sitter starts working on a consistent basis and you’ve exceeded the minimum tax requirement.
As household caregivers, our nannies are held to the highest standards. Our requirements include:
18 years or older
CPR Certified
Clean Background Check
Valid Driver’s License and Safe Driving Record
At least 2 years of experience in childcare
